Strip Tees: A Memoir of Millennial Los Angeles
When is it sexual empowerment versus sexual exploitation?
This is the question Kate Flannery’s memoir had me and my friend, Kate, coming back to again and again. With a literary flair, she tells the story of working for and being sucked into the cult-like American Apparel brand. Her anecdotes made us gasp, made us laugh, but mostly evoked compassion and empathy for Kate and how she attempted to navigate the confusing landscape of women’s sexual liberation, sexism, and misogyny in the early aughts.
Listener discretion advised: this episode contains adult language, discussion about attempted sexual assault/rape
